One Ritual, Many Tongues — A Demonstration of Masonic Universality

At our regular meeting on Saturday 14 November 6026, Emulation Lodge No. 67 will attempt something our Lodge has never done before: a demonstration of Masonic universality, worked under the title One Ritual, Many Tongues.

The Idea

The ritual dialogues will be delivered by the Officers in their native mother tongues — English, Japanese, Tagalog, Greek and Italian — proving that the language of the Craft transcends borders and speaks directly to the heart.

The working will follow our usual Emulation ceremony in every respect: the same words, the same movements, the same order. What will change is the tongue in which each part is spoken. The Worshipful Master will address the candidate in one language, the Senior Warden will answer from the West in another, and the response will carry the same meaning in every case — because the ritual belongs to no single country and no single people.

The Tongues of the Craft

- English — the language in which our Lodge is regularly worked, and the tongue of the Emulation working we practise. - Japanese — spoken by a Brother whose journey to the Craft began on the other side of the world. - Tagalog — the voice of the many Filipino Brethren who carry the Craft with them wherever they labour. - Greek — an echo of the ancient world from which so much of our symbolism descends. - Italian — the language of the Grand Orient tradition and of some of the oldest Masonic lodges in Europe.

Why It Matters

Freemasonry admits no distinction of nation, tongue or station. A Brother raised in Manila, Athens, Tokyo or Rome carries the same letters, the same signs and the same obligations; he needs no interpreter to be received among us as a Brother. This demonstration is our small proof of that great principle — that the ritual, however it sounds on the ear, is understood in the heart.

It is also a fitting tribute to our own Lodge: an English-speaking Lodge under the Gran Logia de España, meeting in Madrid, where Brethren born under a dozen flags sit in harmony around one altar.

Brethren and Visitors

The demonstration will take place at our regular meeting on the second Saturday — 11:00 am — followed by the Festive Board. Visiting Brethren are welcome as always; please contact the Secretary in advance so we may greet you properly.

Come and hear the Craft speak in every tongue — and understand every word.
